What is this herbal medicine?

GOKSHURA (Small Caltrops/Tribulus terrestris) has been used for centuries as a general tonic by the Ancient Greeks. It is used in Ayurvedic medicine to maintain efficient kidney and urinary function and in reducing renal discomfort. It is effective in treating urinary tract disorders because it promotes the flow of urine and cools and soothes the membranes of the urinary tract. Gokshura has also been described as an aphrodisiac herb in Ayurveda. In traditional Chinese medicine, Gokshura is used to support the normal function of the male reproductive system. Bodybuilders and athletes frequently add the herb to their health regimen as a supplement supporting normal levels of testosterone production in the body. Researchers at the Chemical Pharmaceutical Research Institute in Sofia, Bulgaria, were researching Gokshura as far back as the 1970s. Clinical trials in the 1990s in India studied Gokshura as a traditional tonic, showing it supported the body's normal level of energy production (Indian Drugs, 1993;30(10):498-500). Gokshura is found throughout Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Southern Europe, in sandy soils. Gokshura is also found as a weed on cultivated fields and in waste lands.

Active constituents

The plant contains saponins, which after hydrolysis yield the sapogenins diosgenin, gitogenin, chlorogenin, ruscogenin, 25D-spirosta-3 and 5-diene, among others. The flavonoids rutin, quercetin, kaempferol, kaempferol-3-glucoside and-rutinoside, and tribuloside have been isolated from the leaves and fruit. The seeds contain the carboline alkaloids harmane and harmine. Harmol is also found in the herb. These constituents render the herb its therapeutic properties.

Herb functions:

  • Libido enhancer: The herb improves sexual desire and drive, which subsequently improves sexual performance. It is a nonhormonal biostimulator and increases the level of natural endogenous testosterone.
  • Erectile dysfunction: Gokshura is beneficial in erectile dysfunction as it strengthens the penile tissue and enhances penile erection.
  • Urogenital: Gokshura helps in the management of urogenital diseases like kidney stones, bladder infection and other urinary tract infections. It helps promote general urinary tract health by eliminating dysuria (painful/bleeding urination) and crystalluria (presence of crystals in urine)
