Fluvastatin wordt in combinatie met een dieet gebruikt om het gehalte aan "slechte" cholesterol (lagedichtheid-lipoproteïne of LDL) in het bloed te verlagen, het gehalte aan "goede" cholesterol (hogedichtheid-lipoproteïne of HDL) te verhogen en de triglyceriden (een soort vet in het bloed) te verlagen.
